Update Available: White Paper Bible version 1.3 for iPhone

The White Paper Bible website has long enjoyed "tags" for organizing papers into topics. There are already hundreds of tags on the site to help quickly find the scriptures you're looking for.

Version 1.3 of the iPhone app now provides the ability to browse and search for papers by tag. I love this new feature, and it's the primary way I pull verses to post daily on Twitter for @whitepaperbible.

If you have papers or will be adding them, please go to the website and make sure you add tags to them. You can add more than one tag to a paper, and you'll be prompted with existing tags to help keep things organized.

Your iPhone will prompt to update your version of the app, but you can also grab it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/white-paper-bible/id339473540?mt=8

Please take a moment to rate the app through the App Store and let me know what you think. If you have any suggestions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact me through the app site or User Voice page.

I really want this app to be useful to you; something that enriches your Bible study and empowers you with the scriptures you need wherever you are: in a coffee shop, hospital room, on a part bench, at the playground, wherever.

Enjoy!

WPB For Windows Phone 7: A Sneak Peak

Windows Phone 7 is hitting carriers and I'm excited about this platform. Though I've yet to hold one in my hands and use it, I've read many good reviews about the performance and polish of the software. And as a developer I really like working in this technology.

I want to make sure White Paper Bible is ready to go for WP7 users. Check out this sneak peak.

WPB for Android - Interested In Getting the First Look?

While the iPhone version of White Paper Bible is alive and well, I've been working on an Android version.
I'm happy to announce I have a beta candidate. If you have an Android phone or device running version 2.2, I'd like to give you an early look at the app and give you an opportunity to provide the first feedback. If you're interested, please give me a shout at dave [at] whitepaperbible [dot] org.
All you need to do is tell me what model device you have and I'll get you setup. The install is as easy as a link I'll send you to open on your phone (so much easier than iPhone!).

Below is a peek at the Android app.

In other news, White Paper Bible now has 345 user contributed papers spanning 286 topics. It's great to see people continuing to register daily and receive benefit from the service.

If you don't have an iPhone or Android phone, remember that http://whitepaperbible.org/ is optimized for mobile and works well on most mobile browsers.

White Paper Bible Version 1.2 Is iOS 4 Compatible

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer! Apple is due to release new iPhone software called iOS4 today, 6/21/2010, and then later this week the new iPhone 4 will begin to arrive.

In order to maintain full compatibility with iOS 4 I have submitted version 1.2 of the White Paper Bible iPhone app. The current versions of White Paper Bible (1.0 and 1.1) will not work with iOS 4. You can confirm your version of the app by looking at the About screen.

As soon as it is approved, I'll let everyone know!

[UPDATED]

Version 1.2 is NOW available in the App Store. Get it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/white-paper-bible/id339473540?mt=8

Mobile Website Now Online

I finally dug out from under enough client work that I was able to put the finishing touches on the WPB mobile site and release it into the wild.

Now when anyone hits http://whitepaperbible.org from a mobile device it will serve up a mobile optimized version of the site by default. You can override this in the footer of the page by choosing Standard instead of Mobile.

Hopefully this a welcome optimization for our Blackberry, Android, Palm, Windows, and Symbian toting brethren. Of course, it works just as well on an iPhone, but you get all that and more from the White Paper Bible iPhone app already. Speaking of iPhone and mobile, development is continuing on version 2.0 of the iPhone app which will support not only iPhone but a variety of other mobile platforms as well.

Please let me know if you have any trouble at all with the mobile site. I've tested successfully on various iPhones and my HTC Android handset.

Enjoy!

White Paper Bible Continues to Grow

Since launching the WPB iPhone app in December, WPB has been steadily growing as people discover the site and share it with their friends. Overall it's been a smooth, successful start and I couldn't be more pleased.

As of today, the registered user base has grown to 266 awesome people contributing 235 papers chock full of potent scripture (it's all potent, right?). Those papers are tagged in 227 categories. And it's growing daily!

Growth is great, and it's showing me organically where to invest next steps in the app. With that many papers, the load time on the home screen is slowing down (though it's still pretty darn fast). I have a local data storage solution begun, and this growth is motivation to finish that implementation.

The buzz has been huge around the iPad, and lately regarding Flash on other mobile devices. This provides a lot of opportunity for me personally to do more things with White Paper Bible. I'll be praying through the right opportunities to attack. I'm not a fan of beating the air with my fists.

So, I hadn't posted anything in a while to the blog and wanted to through out a quick update. If you're on Facebook or Twitter I've been sending out hourly scriptures from various papers on the website. It's a great way to have the voice of God interrupting your day and having the Word distract us from the world for a moment.

Please share WPB with everyone and anyone you think will find is beneficial. And though I chat up the iPhone app a lot, remember the website rocks also! That audio feature that reads your scriptures to you is my favorite.

Mobile Web Preview

I've been working the past few weeks on a mobile web version of the Whitepaperbible.org website to better accomodate Palm Pre, Android, Blackberry and other smartphone users. I'm really pleased with the results and the usability thus far. Here's a sneak peek.

It looks identical on Android although these screen captures are obviously from an iPhone.

1.1 iPhone Update Now Available

Apple seems to be on a roll approving apps quickly. Yay! The 1.1 White Paper Bible app was approved this morning and tonight finally appeared in the App Store.

Check for updates on your iPhone to get the latest version. You'll notice on the About screen it still says version 1.0. Sorry about that. It is indeed 1.1 in the App Store and should show up when you check for updates.

For a list of the minor updates, read the previous post here: http://blog.whitepaperbible.org/iphone-app-update-version-11-submitted-for-re

iPhone App Update Version 1.1 Submitted for Review

Version 1.1 of the White Paper Bible iPhone app has been submitted to Apple for review.
During its first month of life in the App Store the iPhone app has been reported to be very stable and fast. Yay! We've also quadrupled registered users and content.
The 1.1 update is a minor release to address a few issues.

1) Updated scrolling on the Papers list. Currently, if you search for a paper, then go to the paper detail view, then back to the list and cancel the search you'll find the scrolling length doesn't match the height of the content. This is now fixed.

2) User registration updated. There were some common email address schemes that were not getting through the email validation when registering. I've updated this with a more relaxed validation.

3) Paper save validation now prevents saving a paper with the default "Enter a Title" hint.
There are many larger development initiatives ongoing to add functionality to the iPhone app. I didn't want to continue delaying these fixes for that release, nor rush new features before they are fully tested.

As always, if you have feedback or are having any trouble with the app or website, please contact me at dave@whitepaperbible.org. You can also submit feature requests and make suggestions at http://wpb.uservoice.com.

How to Gift the WPB iPhone App for Christmas

A lot of you awesome people have asked how you can "gift" the White Paper Bible iPhone app to your friends and family (and perhaps total strangers) this holiday season. Well, iTunes and Apple don't provide a direct method for doing this just yet, however Resa Troyer of Resa Design has come to our rescue.

Resa designed a beautiful, printable gift card pouch that you can print and write your top 10 favorite apps to recommend. Then just purchase an iTunes gift card at...well...just about any retailer anywhere, and insert the card into the pouch.

And Resa even got you started by writing White Paper Bible in the first slot. Yay!

But you have 5 more slots....what to recommend...

While I'm clearly biased and think White Paper Bible is so powerful that everyone everywhere should have it, there are also other awesome Bible apps in the App Store. I'm all for any medium that invites us on a slippery slope deeper into God's Word, into life-changing relationship with Him, and ignites us to action for Him.

Go forth and gift!

Dave

p.s. THANKS RESA!
